Hi! I heard that people are using tumbled glass for landscaping, wanted to check if anyone has used it, and if so how has it worked out. I would love to see what you have done with it too..
Thanks!

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

I'm using recycled glass in a display garden that I'm building. It's expensive--about $1.50 per pound. A 50 pound bag will cover 10 square feet, 1 inch deep. There are different sizes, colors and mixes, so the possibilities are endless.

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

agreed, Expensive.

I have it used in the garden in several different ways.

It is used as a mulch in a few of my succulent succulent beds.

It is used as a spinkled top dressing to my gravel pathways - looks like blue confetti, abeit tumbled colored glass

It is used as decorative inserts in my borders.
- my front entry garden has 2x4 pt borders that are laid out in a Mondrian pattern. In some of the empty rectangles I have the tumbled glass.

No problems with it even when my little neigbhbors came over and decided to 'refresh' the Mondrian blocks and threw the 'old' tumbled glass into the planting beds.
No problem with my dog or the kids stepping on it and getting cut.
The only problem is when I have to pull the dollars out of my purse to buy a refresher 50 pound bag.

Can I see some pictures? I think they could look wonderful, any idea where I would find them locally? All I see is mail order and on top of being expensive, I would not want to pay shipping.
Thanks!!

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

for local resources try google or the yellow pages.

this is my resource : www.landscape2go.com

photos : http://www.landscape2go.com/4.htm

I especially like Andy Cao's photos of the Chamount festival installation he did in the early 2000's.
But my favorite installation of his is the one he did while as a Rome Prize recepient - the red garden.
it might be on the web somewhere and is worth a google search if you can find photos of it.

I'm planning to put tumbled glass in my pathways. I'll probably use glass from Bedrock Industries, as they're just a few miles away from me:

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

Hi- I'm building a house in Florida and am considering recycled glass mulch. Any comments or suggestions? Would like ideas for creating a waterscape garden- using carribean mix glass, snowy egret statue and some plants- what plants would work to look like a water scene?

 o
RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

I'm wondering if you could use the glass that comes from broken windshields? Isn't it designed not to cut? Of course it wouldn't be as pretty but I'm sure with the talent I've seen on GW someone would come up with something spectacular!!!

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

If anyone does have a physical source in Houston I would appreciate it. I am going to try San Jacinto Stone in the Heights but I have been there numerous times and do not remember seeing it. Thanks for your assistance.

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

I've called several nurseries, landscape contractors, and retail building supply outlets in the Houston area in search of tumbled glass, but with no success. Found one manufacturer online that said it sold to a Missouri City outlet. Called Missouri City; lady said they had none in stock but could order it. Said she'd see if she could find anyone in Houston area that had it and would call me back. That was weeks ago, but no call yet.

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass?

Hi. This is Shirley Bovshow, garden designer and co-host of Discovery Home Channel's "Garden Police" show. I love to use tumbled glass in the garden! It's expensive, so I always use a underlayment material or weed cloth so that the glass does not become imbedded in the soil.

My co-host, Michael Glassman and I have used tumbled glass in a variety of our designs for the show. I also have used it in my private practice. Please take a look at some of the photos from my web site. Hope it inspires some ideas.

In a dry river bed:

In a succulent garden bed:

For a glass runnel and detailing a fountain:

I have a lot more photos. I invite you to watch my show on the Discovery Home Channel every Thursday night at 8 PM. I have an extensive database of all Garden Police episodes with before and after photos, details and sources for garden decor material and plant lists. You can check out the web site after each episode airs for this information.

By the way, we use American Specialty Glass. They ship all over the country.

Hi,
I don't know much about this stuff (gardening in general), but out local recycling center (Comal County, New Braunfels, Tx) offers free tumbled glass to the public. I doubt that you will be able to find the different colors, sizes, and that sort of thing, but it is free!

American Specialty Glass is your best bet for tumbled recycled glass nuggets and glass chips. See www.asgglass.com. Tumbled glass for landscaping is one of their specialties. They ship via UPS all over the US. Some cities have dealers/distributors.

In Houston, Joshua's Native Plants has an in-stock selection of products that might meet your needs. Their webpage is http://www.joshuasnativeplants.com/gardenglass.html and phone number is 713.862.7444.

Tumbled glass: how do you keep it clean?

I love the look, but how do you deal with all the crud that ends up in our gardens? We've got oak trees which drop those little caterpillar flowers in the spring, leaves in the fall, twigs and sticks all year round. There's always something that needs to be raked or swept up. How do you keep the tumbled glass looking pristine--a blower maybe?

RE: Anyone use tumbled glass update?
