Your hill seems tame compared to mine..... :-))

But I know you would like ideas to get to the bottom. We purchased our home that has had 2 prior owners who did what they could to step down the hill. Here are some suggestions based on what is on our property.

Railroad tie steps, secured by rebar.

Log steps, secured by rebar.

Gradual low terrace steps framed by wood and brick.. Secured by rebar.

Concrete steps.

Our property is big, and not much of this connects, which is why I never go down this hill without a hiking staff in hand. None of our steps have railings, and that hiking staff is great for balance! PLUS, you can flick off an unwelcome snake now and then....

Our property has some nice terraces for planting. There are probably some native plants that would do well where you are. Native plants usually require little maintenance.

Our hillside has drip irrigation everywhere. 12 stations worth. We grow lots of fruit trees on our hillside. We have a vineyard on our hillside also. We do maintain those trees. The one thing that holds the hillside up and requires no maintenance is juniper. I think that pretty much grows everywhere.

I'm surprised nobody has given you any ideas but me so far. I don't think many people live on hillsides in comparison.

We have different terrain. We encounter rocks and boulders everywhere. I would start at the bottom of your hill and shovel a flat space into the hill and shore it up with a solid log, redwood, or railroad tie. Then work your way up the hill, shoveling out flat places between wood steps.

There is about two feet of flat between each wood step you see in the photo. You could even do some pine type rails from those trees in the forest in your photo.

Am wondering what is to be at the bottom of the hill? Why do you wish to go there? You could spend tens of thousands of dollars creating a nice path to where no one wishes to go. Or is it utilitarian for maintenance purposes only?
