Need some landscaping ideas

We are putting up a rail fence around our yard in a few weeks, partially to keep our dog in and (mostly) to keep the neighborhood kids and the trash they leave there out. The back part of our yard butts up against an existing chain link fence from another property owner. Our plan is to put the fence up, and we're getting some small arborvitae to plant OUTSIDE of the fence to eventually have a privacy hedge. In order to leave enough room between our fence and the chain link fence for the arbs to grow, we're going to have to leave about 3-4 feet of space between the two.

Since the arbs will be small for the first couple of years, we are looking for some ideas in terms of landscaping, etc, to put between our fence and the chain link for the time being so that it doesn't turn into a giant walk-through for everybody in the neighborhood while they trample our young shrubs.

Any ideas? We had thought about running some 4x4s into the ground between the two fences and putting up a few bird houses or a bat house or something just to break up the "runway" that would be there, but I'd like some other ideas too.
