Forgot to say almost full sun. It's the southwest side of the house and the laurels get sun from about 11am on.

Abelia x grandiflora?

bboy, I went to a large local nursery yesterday and asked about abelia x grandiflora. I was told that it's not quite everygreen in our area, and marginally hardy.

Too bad, it looks like a very pretty plant.

Any other suggestions?

What I think would look nice is something smallish, cascading and with leaves/needles that would contrast with the laurel's. And not grow higher than about 3-4 feet, or could be kept pruned to that size.

We originally planted cypress in those spaces, but they quickly grew too tall and bumped against our house's 3-ft overhang. So we had to take them out last year, and it looks so bare with nothing there.

Anyone's suggestions most appreciated!

Are your cherry laurels Prunus caroliniana or P. laurocerasus?

It is Prunus laurocerasus Otto Luyken.

Choose something with similar upright branching. The Euonymus japonicus has a compatible habit, can be acquired without yellow variegation. But you might be within the area where it is prone to mildew or scale.
