planting under maple tree

Hi everyone

I have read a few different blog on opinions of planting under Norway maples, but I have to try. We have a very large, 50 year old Norway maple in our front yard. The roots are grass covered but visible. Can I build up with soil around the trunk (not letting the soil actually come into contact with the trunk) and plant hostas and other shade plants there? I was hoping that given the age of the tree, I wouldn't have to worry about killing it.

Thanks
