We live in zone 5. 5 years ago we had a paver patio installed. The following spring, the plastic edging they had installed had heaved from the frozen, thawing ground.

Every year I mean to repair it but that means removing all of the surrounding mulch, dirt and any grass that has grown in over it, then excavating the dirt that has swelled up so the edging can be again placed below the patio bricks where it can't be seen. BLAH!

The patio has held up all these years without any sign of heaves or dips. I think I already know the answer to this but do I really need the edging? And if I must, is there any way to ensure it doesn't heave up again after I fix it?
