New to landscaping and need some tips!

We bought our first home last summer and have been busy doing all sorts of things around the house but the one thing that bothers me the most is how empty the front of the house looks. First thing I notice when I pull into the yard.

I would like to put a bed with some plants and possibly flowers along the front of the house. Problem is, I don't know where to start. My parents have hostas and I love the look of them but we get a lot of sun there so I'm not sure that's an option for me. Any tips or advice on what I could do that wouldn't break the bank but will add some curb appeal.

How are the front steps accessed? Can you show the entrance path?

This is the best photo I have of the path right now. We've since cleaned it up a bit but it's in the same spot.

The wedding cake steps look like they're awaiting the daily arrival of the masses, but the walk looks like it's barely expecting anyone! I would definitely upgrade/widen the walk. It's layout will likely form the front edge of the planting bed.

The tree in the lawn is past due for limbing up. Much of its canopy is blocking the house.

Nice house, much potential. I do however find the shape of the front porch awkward, maybe it's because of the railing configuration... Long term maybe a square design would be more fitting for the house, but as new home owners I'm sure funds are short.

With landscape along, you can add some great curb appeal.
