Need design help!

We purchased this home last Labor Day and now need help redesigning the space in front of the picket fence. Currently, it is full of wildflowers ( echinacea and others) that grew out of control. I want a cleaner look. The new picket fence is on its way and I was considering three endless summer hydrangeas; however I would be very curious what people recommend. Grasses? Ornamental trees? Also , mulch or river rocks to cover the weeds?
It is north facing however there is adequate sunshine all day.
