Pool Demolition - Water Drainage Issues

We are removing an inground pool that is about 6 to 7 feet deep on the deep end and about 4 feet on the shallow end.

We've used a jackhammer last weekend to break up the concrete on bottom of the pool, which was only a couple of inches thick. After heavy rains a couple of days ago the pool has filled up to about 3 feet below the top.

We thought breaking up the bottom would allow the water to drain. Is this just the water table rising and will it go back down again?

We did notice before breaking up the bottom that it would fill up a couple of feet every few days. Is this just water from surrounding grounds accumulating in the empty space?

After breaking up the bottom, there is just clay and dirt below. We left the small broken pieces of concrete on the bottom as a drainage layer.

Our next step is to fill it with dirt but with all this water accumulating even though the bottom has been broken up I'm draining it with a pump again. Is it going to naturally drain or will it keep filling up like this?

We thought after it rained we'd give it a couple of days to see if it would drain, but It has just been rising inch by inch the last couple of days as if the saturated yards surrounding us from the rainfall are soaking down into the empty pool area.

There are steel sides which we are either going to poke holes in or remove but they are just retaining the walls and so the dirt bottom of the pool we expected to drain fine.

We really don't want to put dirt in if it's going to become a mud soup! Why is this happening? Is this normal? What can we expect to do now since this is happening?

Any advice and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
