| I am trying to create a semi-shade garden around a very old and very big holly tree. There are lots of dead holly leaves on the ground, do they change the balance of the soil? - can i leave them and just add mulch, soil etc. and plant - or should i try and remove the holly leaves (of course each season they will return). (right now lily of the valley seem to love the area) thanks |

| No, they won't change the balance of the soil. They're a problem only in that they're tough and take forever to decompose. And they've got spines. I might rake off the top layer and go from there. Wear gloves. |
