Understory Tree

What is the best understory tree that will get some sun, some will have morning sun and some afternoon late. We are looking for a tree that will fill in under trees that are tall and losing their lower branches and one that will give us some level of privacy.

Maybe Cornus alternifolia, if it never gets too hot and dry there.

amelanchier, japanese maple are other options.
i like boy's suggestion too.
