best tool for lawn reboot?

Hi all,

First post! I'm trying to figure out the best tool to essentially reboot my back lawn. The old owners didn't take care of it, and it's been over run by some kind of creeper vine that initially looks to have taken root along the side fences in the yard, but now has wandered over ground level.

I tried to dig out the creeper by using a large garden shovel, but it took me about 3 hours to remove plus/minus ten square feet of it out--it's some pretty heavy duty stuff.

Anyway, I'm thinking there's some kind of walk-behind tool that may available to rent that'll save some time and disrupt it enough to keep it from growing back. Any heavier-duty tools out there worth investigating for the job? The "cover the yard with plastic and heat it to death" method won't work well here because we've got some huge oaks covering the majority of the back yard. I think the shade may have helped the vine overtake the grass in the first place.

Please help!
