If this is the wrong forum someone feel free to redirect me (-: we live in the middle of a forest - very natural setting. Our house is log siding stained butternut (kind of a cedar color but with a little more brown in it)We have a porch and a side deck both stained the same color. Our shutters and trim are dark brown. I need advice on what color to paint the front door. The only thing i can think of is brown and I don't want that. There are no plantings as of yet except green trees and and a oshio beni japanese maple. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

color is subjective as well as emotional. you will receive just as many varied answers as there are colors because each of us will bring our own experiences. then there is the challenge of interpreting ones description of a suggested color. Forest green to one person might actually be Avocado green to another and Kelly green to another. the suggestions provided may not be in vain because you may have developed a color pallette from the exchange of ideas, but in closing, it will come down to you and your paint mixer at the end of the day.

You say there are no plantings yet, does this mean there are some in the works? If so, wait until you work out your landscaping, and choose a color that complements your siding color while picking up on something in the landscaping that you want to be a focal point. Will you have any plants with a striking foliage color in a prominent place? A flowering specimen tree or shrub that could give you starting point? Maybe it's as simple as painting it your favorite color, suitably toned down to fit the forest setting.

Benjamin Moore and several other paint companies have programs on their websites that let you to mockup photos of houses (or sometimes, even a photo of your own house) with different paint colors, allowing you to select different colors for the siding and for the trim to see what goes together. The colors on your computer monitor are never going to be exact, but it is an easy way to experiment, and get an approximate answer to the question "What would it look like if I painted the door red?"

Dark Green with black wrought iron hinge straps and a wrought iron door handle..... very log cabin'ish.

I am almost brain dead when it comes to picking colors, but I have always loved the appearance of a wooden door. Now what color wood or stain would go with butternut stained log siding I don't know (I picture butternut as a very light color). With that said I know that paint is cheap and wooden doors are expensive. That is the reason my front door remains the same ugly dark brown that it was when I moved in. I have tan siding and dark brown trim and have wondered about painting my door (though I think my HOA has about 5 approved colors so it should be easy). - Brent

I like contrasting colors on doors. With the paint scheme you desribe, I'd be looking at dark green, deep reds, a rich burnt umber or pumpkiny color.

"color is subjective as well as emotional" Spot on. There are many fine colors such as those suggested by Marymd7, but each will evoke a different response from you. Are you of a subtle mind, or do you want to stand out from the crowd? In addition, the qualities of the door will influence your decision. So Kev C's dark green with wrought iron hardware would work if the door has enough heft to match the statement, but maybe not, maybe it's a cottagey door with windows?

Sorry that I forgot to say that it is a plain steel door with 1 large window - nothing fancy - so it would have to be painted not stained. I would absolutely love the effect that Kev C described if I could get it, but I don't think so. My husband mentioned trying to give it a faux effect with stain to make it look like wood but that's above my skill level. Both my husband and I love the color blue but we both thought that it wouldn't fit into our setting - maybe if I could find the right color blue. Yes I want to put in some gardens but probably not anytime in the near future. I love the cottage look but I am afraid I would just be planting for the deer so for now we are just installing the big things - trees, some evergreens, and hedges. Marymd7 - what is burnt umber? Sounds intersting and like something that I should look into. By the way Brent what does HOA stand for. I never saw that one before.

Home Owners Association...it is part of the reason that when I give directions to my house I say "turn right at the tan house, drive past the tan house on the left and we are the third tan house on the right...just before the tan house". ;-) My HOA is actually pretty lax, but they are a little weird about house and trim color. It was only recently that they started allowing...yea this is radical...white trim. - Brent

Brent-That's crazy. Makes me glad that I live in the country with no one around to care what I do except the deer. And they don't stare too much (-: Oh I'm new to the forums so I'm not quite sure what I am doing. Why do I have to change to subject line each time and what do I change it to if there is no real subject.
RE: color of front door

Blue isn't out of the question but might have to be picked up in another item such as a planter. A dark blue can look great with brown or tan, but might not give the cabin-y feel. Either do the computer thing or head to the paint store and come home with lots of chips. Narrow it down to a few choices and buy the $2 sample jars and paint poster board & hold it up. Choose & paint. And even then, it's only paint on a door--if you hate it you can change it for little $.

You're in the woods with no HOA - go wild! Then paint it a new color next year, then a new color the next. One little bucket of paint will buy you a whole lot of enjoyment. Frankie's got the paint color choosing right, by the way. Also there are a couple of high-end paint colors that are now doing big 1' chips to use at home.

I just had to share this with all of you. I was trying to pick paint colors for the interior of our new house and I asked my husband what colors he liked. He said "Don't ask me to FEEL the colors or my eyes will bleed". I thought of that when someone said about the emotion part of chosing colors. I thought it was funny because some men are like that when it comes to designing. Of course I chose all the paint colors. This is a good question though. I also have a problem with chosing a color for our front door. Currently, the outside is the same ugly, bright, turqouise(sp?) as the rest of the outside of the house and the inside is temporarily painted the same color as the walls, which is called "Pale Pastures" and is like a light mint green color. I've dabbled in Feng Shui a bit and was thinking about the red, but I'm not really sure that will look good with the color I've chosen for the outside, which is a medium tan with a light sage green trim. We just had new windows put in and their frame is white, so I thought those colors would make the windows pop more. I watch too much HGTV. he he LOL So, what do you think? |

Funny that this thread popped back up...I actually did paint my front door a couple months ago. I was a total rebel...I did not even consult the HOA's list of approved colors! ;-) Okay, not a total rebel...I went with a tan-ish color that was darker than my tan siding, but lighter than my brown trim. I just moved to a different house that has burgundy shutters and a dark green door. They will both likely change at some point. I am curious if there is a general feeling that shutters should be the same color as the front door. Sorry...medium tan with light sage green...sounds nice but someone else will have to help with coordinating colors. - Brent

We purchased a house 2 years ago, in a subdivision with a fairly liberal HOA (minimal dues, neighborhood watch & directory)-we've kept it just the way it was-siding is cream, shutters-black, front door-brick red. The house is a pseudo-Colonial, not my favorite style, but it's a great neighborhood, with good schools & great neighbors. My garden has grown up around the house....

I am sure that you have painted the door by now, but here goes if you have not. Take a photo of the front of your house, including the door. Cut the door part out of the picture and then take it to the paint store. Place the color chips behind the photo, and shizaammm you can see (sort of) clearly what it will look like. It actually makes it a lot easier to pick a color. HINT! take the photo and color chip outside to natural light, flourescent lights are awful to pick colors in. NN |
