Both look like one of the junipers. Neither is worth trying to salvage. Doubt you'd get any takers for either specimen.

If mine, I'd saw them off at ground level or below and maybe go after the bigger buried roots with a hatchet or pruning saw. I'm beyond where completely digging up established trees and shrubs is something I'm going to do. And I've successfully planted around any remaining just below ground level rootstock.

No, it isn't a juniper. It is a yew and will respond very well to heavy pruning by putting out new growth from even the oldest, woodiest branches. They appreciate full sun, but will also do well in partial shade, in just about any kind of soil with decent drainage ... the only thing they don't like is "wet feet" - a soggy wet soil.

Not only are they not valuable, I view them as junk shrubs. Especially when they are overgrown like yours. Big shrubs like these are next to impossible to transplant because you can't dig them up.

I would, like someone else said, get a chainsaw (or hire a treetrimmer) and cut them off at the ground. Heavy machinery, like a bobcat, is about the only way to destroy their roots.

Sorry to disagree, Littlebug, but several years ago, during a front yard makeover, we dug up and moved a 5-6' tall yew and it is perfectly happy in its new location. This is only one of several yews that we have moved over the years, and all have done well.

Things change with time: the tree canopy grows or disappears, children arrive and grow up, needs and tastes change, and the garden changes accordingly, but I rarely see the need to discard a reasonably healthy plant ... now, the Japanese barberry and multiflora rose were another story - invasive plants get "shovel pruned" with little regret.
