Path material for transition from ground to bridge

My son is building a footbridge for his eagle project. We need ideas to transition from the ground to the bridge. The end of the bridge at the ground (bridge has a slight ramp) is on footings and has about a 12" step up from the ground. Want a smooth transition that will last for hikers and bikers. Some suggestions are crushed limestone and crushed concrete. Any ideas would be great.

What will hold the crushed material into a foot-high ramp? Sounds almost like a job for poured concrete.
