getting rid of lawn

Hi - I'm in the process of getting rid of lawn in my big back yard. I want to make more of it into low maintenance perennial/shade gardens.

I got some heavy felt from the local paper mill and have it spread out on a big portion of my back yard to get rid of the grass, but what do you all think -- should I leave it down long enough to kill the grass and then take it up or should I leave it and plant on top of it after adding soil and amendments and chips?

I haven't posted pictures on here for a long time and can't remember how to do it, but I'm hoping you can open the link I have below to get an idea of what my back yard looks like.
