There are also loads and loads of ideas for fireplaces here, from people who have already built their own: yardshare.com

Go to library & take out a couple of books on building fireplaces outside. Ortho & Sunset, I think both have books & be sure to do it right. They need good base & don't want dangerous backdrafts or problems with birds nesting in top. You need to check out exactly what is needed. And a screen of iron across top of chimney will keep critters out, people in our area had hundreds of birds come in their house 1 yr, some little bird I never hear of. Of course you are outside but don't want to surprise family with smokey yucky mess. Prevention is so simple, construct it right. Also pay attention to size of chimney required & height. If it's not tall enough I think that is when you get backdraft if you build too hot of fire. I've cleaned up result of that in a house that had blackened mess all around the fireplace & had to repaint. I called the builder over & found out the chimney was too short. They added couple of ft.It was on a modular home so some type of pipe & that stopped the problem. Might want to add a built in BarBQ on the side of it with a flat work space next to it for great entertaining! Books will give you time to see what you can do, or find 1 you like on Internet & then if they don't have the plans get the books to check out the pitfalls.
