fire pit materials? painted steel?

I have a huge pile of leftover steel tubing from and old pool.
It is painted white(i'm sure to prevent rusting) and has fastener holes on either end. I want to build a unique fire pit.

My question is; would I be able to use them to line the exterior of a fire pit? More specifically...
1) do i need to strip the paint off or should I just spray it with another coat of heat resistant paint?
2) will the steel react to the heat by melting or warping?

3)has anyone tried anything like this and have tips?

It's not likely that anyone has done the same before and can advise on the outcome. I think it will be you informing us as to what you did and how it worked out. Unless there's a lot of grease involved, usually heat, steel and exposure to the weather equals rust.
