| my house has had the same landscape for the last 7 years. I would like to bring it up to date a bit and add some color and fill in the planters.
any suggestions? I am in zone 6 thank you! |

| I like to use a low-growing groundcover, such as Veronica prostrata, to gradually take over the mulched areas and add more color to beds in general. In the spring, V. prostrata is a carpet of indigo flowers. The rest of the time, it's an attractive, dark green mat. |

| Presuming that you will keep the beds in their current shape and size, the one closest to the house doesn't seem to need much more than removing the dead daylily scapes and planting some low groundcover--like BD's suggestion of Veronica--to fill in the empty spaces. Can't see much of that garage wall, but it seems like it might be blankety-blank blank. If you want more pizzazz you might consider growing an espaliered something of your choice or a flowering vine on a nice trellis. In the forward bed, I'd put a taller groundcover--like the iris or whatever you have already there--in a solid, circular bed below the trees. In between those groundcovers, plant something low around the rock... like more Veronica. |
