Landscaping on top of limestone gravel

I recently acquired some property with a pond. The pond is spring-fed and has a 60 year old stone retaining wall around the spring's outlet. The banks around the pond, the spring, and the retaining wall were recently dressed with a 6-12" layer of #1 crushed limestone to address erosion and washing out of the banks and earth under the wall. The limestone appears to have been successful in controlling the washout and erosion problems. The pond has great aesthetic potential, but the crushed limestone really takes away from it. What are my options to top dress & plant these banks? I am curious about what plants will grow in limestone. I am also worried that any top dressing I put down will disappear into the crushed stone.

Thanks for any advice!
