Driveway prep?

Hi everyone,

I'm doing a rather large landscaping job on a 1/2 acre property I've been renovating. I've finished the inside and i'm starting to tackle the outside now.

The existing driveway is old asphalt that while very ugly is in ok condition with only a couple of holes in it.

I am planning on bordering with landscape timbers then using a gravel/stone surfacing.

I'm wondering about how to prep for this. Should I get all the existing drive removed and rebuild the sub surface. Can I just dump the gravel on top of the asphalt.

I'm trying to spend as little as possible so I was wondering if tearing it up was overkill.

Thanks for you help!
