I'm hoping my husband and I can tackle both of these trees with a shovel and some pulling rather than getting some sort of tractor. I don't want to use a chainsaw because they always come back in Louisiana. ALWAYS!

On the second one, I'd dig around the base slightly, cut off the trunk below the soil level, drill some holes into the trunk from the top and fill with standard roundup. Cover the trunk with soil after the roundup has been absorbed and forget about it.

The first one, I would dig around the base with a shovel to as deep as feasible. Tie a strong rope around all the branches of the base, attach to a truck and yank out.

The first plant is a Nandina domestica and they are a bit hard to get rid of as the roots run along and go deep, and the plant will resprout from the roots. Best to dig out as much of it as you can and diligently remove or Round-up what ever re-sprouts.

The 2nd one--a Yew? Unfortunately planted to close to the structure.

The first plant is Nandina and it could be dug out easily in my area. I don't know what your soil is like so maybe someone else can advise. The second plant looks like Podocarpus. I would just cut it down and paint the stump with full strength Roundup. It needs to be done soon after making the cut.

I never thought about pulling it with the Jeep. We will give that a try as well as painting whatever's left with roundup. Sounds like that nandina will haunt me like a crepe myrtle that I cut to its stump 2 years ago : /

I like crepes, but this one in particular was growing at a weird angle after several hurricanes and stakes weren't helping and it was crowding out a magnolia.
