HELP! Peony Problems

Posted by Indiana.Matt 5b-6a Indiana (My Page) on

I was given a peony at least 6 yeas ago, and it is a good size now. Every year the buds start to open, getting about the size of a tennis ball, and never open the rest of the way. The outer petals seem to get stiff and stop the flower from opening the rest of the way. Have you ever seen this? Do you know what could be wrong? I hate to through it out. I keep thinking that I'll give it one more year to snap out of it, but it's not snapping. I think the plant might have a deformity or a mutation of some kind. What do you think?

p.s. I do have two other amazing peonies that to great every year.

RE: HELP! Peony Problems

Hi Indiana.Matt,

I have heard of bud blast, but the buds only get the size of peas.

Are all things equal among the 3 plants...basically the same amount of sun, water, fertilizer (if you have fertilized), and at the right depth? Might the problem one be in competition with tree roots moreso than the others?

If the same thing happens this spring, I would dig and divide the peony and put it in 2 different locations, being careful to not plant it too deeply.

p.s. I do have two other amazing peonies that to great every year.
Did you plant them? Do you know when they were planted, or did they maybe come with the property?

RE: HELP! Peony Problems

I wish I had seen this earlier, I never get over to this side. When I moved into this house the existing peonies had this very issue. It's a fungal problem. I cut the foliage completely back to the ground each fall, sterilize my pruners between each plant with alcohol and after pulling back all surrounding vegetation, top dress spring and fall with milled shpagnum peat moss. It took 2 years to get complete control of the situation and I have made this a continuing part of my spring and fall clean up but is certainly worth it.
