| Special Instructions for Exchanges:
* This area is for the purpose of exchanging seeds or plants of the type covered by this forum.
* The exchanges were created to facilitate the arranging of trades of plants and seeds between members. Please do not use them to solicit donations, ask for free plants or seeds, or ask for items in exchange for postage. All requests must be in the context of arranging a trade. If you have nothing to offer at this time, please wait until you do.
* All exchanges are restricted to users from a particular country, region or state. If it isn't indicated otherwise, the exchange is restricted to residents of the U.S. To find an exchange for your location, check the the exchange index.
* Each post must have a type of trade, subject and a message.
* Trading is done at users' discretion. GardenWeb has no control or responsibility over trades arranged here. Keep in mind some traders may let you down, so it might be wise to keep your initial trade with someone limited to smaller items.
* Messages addressed to or meant for particular users should be sent via email and are not allowed in the exchanges.
* If you have trouble with another person coming through with their end of a trade, you must deal with it privately. It is the consensus of the forum users that this type of thing be kept out of our forums. Any public accusation in this forum, or elsewhere at GardenWeb, will result in the accuser being banned.
* To avoid problems when shipping across borders and some state lines, it is best to ship plants bare-rooted and to label the container as such. It is up to the users involved to determine what is legal and what is not.
* This forum is for the purpose of exchanging material, there should be no need to mention money in any postings. If money is mentioned, the posting will be considered an advertisement and the poster will be banned.
* Trading of patented material is unlawful and is strictly forbidden.

Please do not respond to this post, so it will stay at. or near the top of the page. If it slips, please bump it back up.
Currently the link to the actual Special Instructions is a broken one. (I finally reported it, meant to the other day.)
Anyone with any questions concerning the Instructions, feel free to post a question on the Off Topic-Conversations Side of the Exchange Board. The link to Conversations can be found on the main page here, just above the list of Trade Threads
Additionally, if one has nothing to trade, they may want to check out some of the numerous 'offers' of seeds at the Seed Exchange. Look for threads containing SASE, SASBE, BEAP, Newbie, or Free in the Subject of Posting line.

I do hope you will consider maybe trading some of your daylily plants. They are a favorite of many here for sure! Sue |

I have a question. If Gardenweb is not concerned about this problem, since GW has not corrected the Link problem in 5 months, why should we continue to be concerned? - Thanks Terry |
RE: Special Instructions for Exchanges:-Please Read!
| | |
why should we continue to be concerned? JMHO now, but without the Instructions and them being enforced, there would be very few trades on the boards. It would just be a free for all, with folks just looking for stuff, with nothing mentioned in trade...just like it is over at Dick's Garden. since GW has not corrected the Link problem in 5 months, I'm starting to wonder just what the problem is. I wonder if it might be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, or maybe not even fixable. Could that be? S |

Hi Sue, Hi Everyone, Can you believe that this post has been here for 7 months and this is the first time I looked at it. I just have a few little things to add. These are not "rules", just suggestions to make things easier. - Unblock your e-mail please. No one can respond to you if you don't and if you get someone who is a pest you can always block them. -Please include your garden web name when you reply to a post or better yet a link to your list. Especially if you respond by e-mail rather than just answering the post. Sometimes when you get a lot of responce to a post it can get very confusing when the person has there real name, GW name and the tag on their e-mail different. -If someone responds to a post that you have made and you reply by e-mail please say what post you are talking about. For example, if I answer 10 posts today and then you e-mail me and just say something like "those plants are no longer available" I may have no idea what you are talking about. -Please continue the e-mail string whenever possible, then a person can just scroll down and see what was said before. Sometimes we forget to say something when we reply and a new string gets started, but there are some people that send a new e-mail with every reply rather than just hitting "reply". This can get very confusing especially if you change the wording under "subject" -it's not a bad Idea to change the wording under "subject" when you first reply to someone by e-mail instead of by answering the post. For example: If my post was "have strawberries" and 15 people answer me and they all keep "have strawberries" in the subject line it can become confusing. When you write to me via e-mail for the first time you could put something like what ever you are offering in return in the subject line like "blueberry trade". Then it makes it easier to tell you all apart. -Lots of people have spam blockers so it's a good idea to put something in the subject line that will help the person pick out your message from their junk mail in case it gets in there. Good idea to mention GW or trade in the subject line. -Also, I have one little disagreement. Some of my best trades have been with people from overseas. Some countries have rules about not trading plants and others don't. Of course those of us living in the states don't know the rules for all countries but usually people that live there do. I think as long as they follow the rules for their country and mention in their post where they are from they should be welcomed. -One more opinion: The reason countries and states have rules about not trading plants is because people trade plants that go nuts and take over wetlands or other native plants or cause problems for agriculture or are illegal. Please refrain from trading really invasive plants or plants that are illegal. -Thought of one more thing. Please, please, please label your plants. If at all possible lable them with the scientific name so there is not a question about what is actually comming from that root ball. I know there are some European countries that allow plant trading but only if the plants and seeds are labeled with the scientific name. If they are not then they are confiscated. Sue do you think it would be a good idea to post this as a seperate post so people will look at it and not just think it's a bump? That's all I can think of right now. Thanks for listening. Catrina |
RE: Special Instructions for Exchanges:-Please Read!
| | |
| I think it would make a great separate post, maybe with a subject line of Trading-Hints and Tips I think it should be on the Conversation Side, so it can be easily found and us veterans can then point new traders to the post. I think what you posted above, needs some further explanation too or changed a bit. For instance...newbies sure won't know how to unblock their email, especially if they were not even aware they didn't have an email link to be reached in the first place...or if they chose to just post their addy in their post...sigh. I would hesitate to challenge the All exchanges are restricted to users from a particular country, region or state. If it isn't indicated otherwise, the exchange is restricted to residents of the U.S. To find an exchange for your location, check the the exchange index. Right now, I don't think out of the country posts can even be made to the main Plant Exchange. That would mean that members from foreign countries would be cold emailing. I would not myself advocate trading with foreign countries, due to it being a lot of expense (particularly if it was plants), and due to any and all regulations for the different countries. Sometime this winter I will be working on the FAQ for the Seed and The Plant Exchanges. I have already started to gather input from members. The FAQ will then have to be OKed by GW management, before I will be allowed and given access to input them. Here it seems there is a form required for trading seeds with Canada when trading with Canada which form do I need? Here is a thread with some first drafts of FAQ...addressing newbie and newer member issues-first draft. Here is another thread... Newbie question and answer thread!:) and...Needing everyone's input! :) You are welcome to post your above info as is wherever you please...like on the Conversation Side here, or to add it to the Needing everyone's input! :) thread, or both. I so agree with most that you have posted above. It is all a lot for a newbie to take in, and understand, before making/taking the plunge and making the first post. I suggest too that then one is the OP (original poster) of a trade offer, that they check the little box to receive the follow up replies into their email. I just asked about that at the seed Exchange Conversations. Do you check the box to get follow-ups emailed to you? I have in the past advocated that members set their email settings Show my email addy to MEMBERS for ease in trading, but there are 'some' members who do not advocate that, and say/think that is setting a member up to get spam...which I have not had problems with. Rather than advocate something that all do not agree with, I just now leave that off. Then one must explain somewhere the members replying to a thread have their email unblocked, what that means, and just exactly how to unblock it. Sue |

| Sue, I've worked in information technology (computer operations/programming/customer services/support services) since mainframes were king and well into the web development era. The entire GW application could have been re-written since April. I don't think iVillage/Gardenweb is concerned about this problem. |
RE: Special Instructions for Exchanges:-Please Read!
| | |
| I don't think iVillage/Gardenweb is concerned about this problem. I tend to agree with you, but did not really want to say so. It is my understanding that GW is but a very small entity/subsidiary, whatever of iVillage. I'm just thankful that GW is still here, and has not been incorporated into the whole iVillage Forum thing. I for one love the format of all the Garden Web, and The Home Site Forums, as archaic as they might seem to some. Sue |

Catrina, Those are not suggestions. Those are the actual rules. I didn't realize the rules link had been malfunctioning, but it was at some point all there. GW was so much better when it was managed by Spike (GW's founder). The rules were very specific, and every forum was enforced strictly. iVillage does not seem to care at all. The reason this forum is not intended for non-domestic trades is because GW cannot legally promote cross boarder trading. Unless you actually spend the time and money to buy a sanitary certificate (which costs a little over $50) you will more than likely find your plants destroyed and get a little piece of paper in the mail, or if the plant turns out to be something that actually was illegal to import, you could find yourself in jail with a lot more fines than you could ever imagine. These are the rules, they have been in place for what is it, going on 8 years now. They are there for a reason. If you want to go beyond the allowed capabilities of the forum, please do it in private. |

| Welcome Newbies and those who are maybe just new to The Plant Exchange! Thanks to everyone who has helped keep the Special Instructions bumped up to page one. If you have nothing to trade at this time, you might want to check out the Seed Exchange. There are many posts where generous members have offered up their excess seedsfor postage Here are the Special Instructions for The Seed Exchange It includes how to look for the many generous seeds for postage offers. Most all will ask that you mail them a bubble envelope, return postage as well as other requirements....ie GW name, an address label, a list of seeds wanted, etc. |

| Hi bamanannaflowergirl, Welcome to Garden Web! But i have never gotten anything lol i mean anything to start from seed I suggest you check out the Winter Sowing Forum It is a pretty foolproof way of starting seeds with good, to 'great' success. There are a lot of FAQ there and the link is at the top of the forum. There is tons of info there as well as a bunch of winter sowing addicts having a good time on the forum. You might want to add your location to your Member Profile...like I am zone 5/6 S IN. It will then be displayed on your member page and will automatically be shown whenever you post. The location goes in the one box provided for the garden zone and you can update your profile via the Member Pages link found at the bottom of every GW page. hth. Sue...resident busy body who likes to see everyone have a location on their page and whenever they post. |

Hey, Sue - All-knowing trade Queen - what the heck is a BEAP? In the HOSTA trade above someone says "BEAP only" Pam |
RE: Special Instructions for Exchanges:-Please Read!
| | |
| Hi Pam! Some of us have starting to use the acronym BEAP in place of sasbe at the Seed Exchange. sase-sasbe is NOT a self addressed envelope-bubble or otherwise explains it. I suspect the member mentioning beap in the hosta thread was wanting the hostas for postage, as opposed to trading. There have been lots who have not noticed the Special Instructions for the Exchange thread here before jumping to post....but we are all human. I'm lurkin here, and trying to sit on my hands so I won't respond to some trade threads. There is one right now that is awfully tempting...but it is still pretty early here for so many things. Sue |
