Daylily and iris damage/need to replace

Posted by wishnforspring z5 upstate NY (My Page) on

Has anyone else experienced problems with either this year? My poor dl's seem to have died then I'm now getting a few that are looking a little better. I've noticed alot of yellowing and ruffled edges also. The iris-TB mostly look like they have rotted off at the rhizome, Not all just some.Same with some crowns of my dl's.Can they be saved???
I lost quite a few I ordered from Gilbert Wilde from last year. I has made me less interested in my gardens...sigh.
If anyone has to TRADE (NOT for Postage) I have a list that is updated but have more to add to it.Larger trades are better since postage is always an issue
NO postage TRADES only please

Hi wishnforspring,

Sorry to hear of your DL and iris issues. You might try asking about the iris over on the Iris Forum, but I would suggest digging them out and inspecting them, and then resetting, possibly in another area.

Did you know that your Member Page email link has disappeared, thus there is no way to contact you? I imagine it disappeared a while back when GW was having so many issues.

Good luck and Happy Trading.

Sue

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problems with your daylilies and iris. It sounds like you have a problem with rot especailly if you have had lots 0f rain this spring. I have dug the plants, cut off the rotten places and then soaked them in a bleach and water solution. This usually works for me. Any questions, email me.

Hello. I emailed you about a possible trade? I am eliminating duplicate iris and have a medium flat rate box ready to go. Wondering if you would be interested in sending perrennials, except iris and yellow stella de daylily? Any others would be great, but sounds like you need to save what you have left.
I do not need a 1 for 1 trade; if you send 1 to my 3, is ok with me. I've just overdone it on iris and need other plants in my garden.
If fall is better for you for trading; ok with me. I would send the iris now and you could send the box in the fall when ready.
The iris sound like root rot to me. Dig up, cut off rotten part, let dry out a few days, trim off leaves about 3ish inches from bulb and replant. Be sure the dirt dries up between watering.

Hi wishn', I had the exact same problem with a some of my iris too. And since we are both in upstate NY I am assuming it was the crazy wet spring we had. I dug up my mooshie ones trimmed them back, and then let them dry for 1 day on my deck. I then dug up the dirt around where they were and disposed of it (I didn't know if the rot could stay in the soil), replace the dirt and replanted. They seem to be doing fine now. Crossing my fingers they don't die. They are some of my favorites! So sorry to hear about your loss! vina

Thanks everyone- I have started digging and cutting ect.I do also have a ton of ants, both the small brown and yellow.I have discoverd that sometimes they slow the growth of my other plants so this may be some of the problem. Vina, we traded last year-up for another? I am interested in any dwarf iris you may have.Cocol-yes., I did receive your email. I will be sending you a return email....

Update:
Thank you Colcol for the HUGE box of iris rhizomes once the weather straightens out I will send you a HUGE box of perennials as I promised!
My iris still have some issues and the snails are still feasting- now I have seen Japanese beetles -ick! The DL's are still weird looking but all have buds and I am sure will be bloming soon-hopefully it was just the foilage that was effected.
Flowergirl34- I will start on the turtle soon-my foot is keeping me inside still :( Dr. again on Friday sigh.....
