How far in advance of an upcoming plant swap do you plan ahead, dig up extra plants? Do you ever plant perennial seeds in pots to take to the plant swap? I started potting up on Saturday but next year I plan to do it sooner. I potted up a Malva Zebrina and it is in distress, so I'm hoping to nurse it along so it'll look okay and healthy. I was shocked to see the long tap roots that plant has. I have a product that I bought last year but never used it called Miracle Gro Quick start. I mixed it up this morning according to directions but I watered the plants on Sunday and the soil looks still damp so I will wait for a day or so. Has anybody had an experience with transplants? Am I just being too impatient? I've potted up in several size pots. The 4 in. pots seem so small for some of the plants I've chosen. Maybe I need to divide even more down to a seedling per 4 in. pot?

I use Miracle Gro Quick Start all of the time when transplanting and it is a great product! Keep the transplants in the shade and they should perk up in a day or two! Good Luck!

I just finished potting up more plants this morning that I want to take along, had some special request. The ones that I'm concerned about not looking their best by Saturday is the rose campion and ther is one clustered bellflower plant. Maybe it will bounce back. How often do you use the MG Quick start on your transplants? Thanks for sharing that information. Glad I asked! I dug up some columbine seedlings this morning. Hope they look as good by Saturday as they did before I dug them up. They always seem so fragile. The only trouble with those seedlings is not knowing what color they will be. You know the seedlings will land anywhere; and you won't know what colors you have until it blooms. Boy, do they ever reseed! I love them though. They sure add color in the Springtime to the flowerbeds. Maybe the only way to be sure of what color is to plant the original seeds in a container? collect seeds from that container and repot in another container and label right away. Does that make sense?
