Wanted: Aquarium Plants

Posted by audrey z5 PA (My Page) on

My goldfish keep eating all the plants I put in with them. (Sigh.) And, although aquarium plants aren't usually expensive themselves, the shipping rates are pretty steep! So, if anybody has any aquarium plants--such as anacharis, java fern, sagittaria, etc.--they'd be willing to swap, please let me know. Thanks!

Audrey, it would be much cheaper to go to your local pet store and buy plants - they are usually less than $2 each.

Yes, if you're looking for more food for your goldfish, it may be cheaper to go buy some, and grow them yourself somewhere. I have riccia and java moss that I grow and put more in my tanks when the fish have eaten it all. Goldfish will eat any plants that are in their tank.

I could send you some of both, though, but it would probably freeze right now. But what do you have to trade, other than aquarium plants? I also have parrot's feather, hornwort, and something I think is a type of bacopa.

Thanks, both of you, for your suggestions. Kayjones, I did try my local pet store, but the guy there seemed to have mostly plastic plants in his aquariums and was only able to dig up one live one for me.

Eahamel, you're probably right that it's getting too late to mail plants now. Back when I posted, we were still having a few nights above freezing. But that's probably over for a while now!

I do have unusual seeds to swap and some cuttings rooting on my windowsill--things like variegated abutilons, tropical hibiscus, etc.--that I could probably trade eventually. But those take longer at this time of year, and I think only the fuchsias and impatiens have already rooted.

If you are just getting it for the fish, you know they can eat nonaquatic plants right? Try zucchini

the petshop sells clips that suction cup to the side of the tank to hold any food the fish might like. I feed mostly the wilting outer leaves of the romaine and leaf lettuce that i eat but they like fish and lean meat too.

Thanks for the advice. I do feed my goldfish chopped peas occasionally, in addition to their fish food. The plants aren't just for them, but to make the aquarium more attractive as well. It looks pretty bare just now. But I'll probably have to live with that until the weather improves!
