Ooddles of narcissus to trade!

Posted by duramater Sunset WGB zone 14 (My Page) on

My garden is overrun with paper whites and irises; clearly the person who lived here before me went a bit overboard! I usually give them away each fall (by the hundreds in the case of the narcissus) and would like to trade them for other plants. I am a novice gardener and have lots of space so I'm not picky. I would just like to have more diversity in my yard without it costing a fortune! :) I am new here and will post a list of things I'd like and a pic of the irises soon so as to be more articulate. thanks!

RE: Ooddles of narcissus to trade!

Hi duramater,

Welcome to Garden Web and The Plant Exchange.

Since you said you were a novice gardener, I am curious as to whether or not these paper whites were dug previously, or if you had intended to dig them now. Paperwhites (daffodils) should not be dug now that they have broken dormancy beneath the soil surface, but instead should be dug late in the spring after the foliage has yellowed a good bit.

You 'might' want to also fill in a location in the one box provided for the garden zone. Many members (myself included) will not respond to trade posts where the member's location is unknown. Postage costs is always a consideration when trading.

btw...where is Sunset WBG?...just curious.

Yes, posting a pic of your irises would be great. It is however too late in many of the colder parts of the country to plant irises and expect them to live through the many winter freezes and thaws which causes heaving.

You might also want to check out the Winter Sowing Forum. There are some great FAQ at the top of the page there and wintersowing is a great way to economically increase the number of plants in your garden, as well as being a lot of fun. If you have seeds available for trade you might try posting at The seed Exchange. If you don't have any seeds to trade at this time, you might check out some of the many generous offers of seeds for postage.

one last thing...it would be handy to other members if you would set up a clickable email link on your Member Page so you can most easily be reached.

hth.
