| Is it absolutely necessary to put the seeds in moist vermiculite? Why can't they just be put into the freezer, or fridge in a baggie?
What does the vermiculite do? Does it insulate them some how? Thanks in advance for your help! Carrie |

| Hi Carrie, It's not just the cold they need, it's cold + moisture, so moist soil, moist vermiculite, a damp coffee filter or a wet paper towel in the fridge all provide that moist + cold environment that they need. (as does winter sowing.) |

| P.S. It all has to do with providing conditionsthat will cause the chemical changes necessary to break down the seed coat and induce germination. Some plants indigenous to colder climates have evolved so that they require a cold/moist period before they germinate. Basically, this keeps them from germinating before winter and then getting killed off! |
