Daffodils-the ones that were not 'show worthy'

Last Saturday was the first of the local Daffodil Shows, and my very first show to enter. Thursday I went out and picked multiple blooms, either for entering the show, or to get some pics of the individual blooms for my records.

Here is a bouquet of the ones that did not make the cut to be exhibited. Aren't they all beautiful though anyway?

Fri eve, I changed my mind about showing any daffs but was going to the show anyway. I was encouraged to come early, and was told I could watch the many exhibitors prepare their entries and help. Sat morning before I left I went out to the garden and picked several NO ID daffs in the hopes of maybe getting a couple of them identified. When I got to the show, 2 daffs were immediately identified, and I was encouraged to enter them. With some help, I got the entry cards filled out with the appropriate info, and got them placed in the right class.

One bloom won a first place and the other won a second place. I was so surprised and so pleased. Now that I have one show under my belt, I am looking forward to the next one which is next Thursday.

Here is a couple of pics (from last year) of the daff I finally got named. It is a pre 1731 daff named Orange Phoenix. It won a first place in its class.

Congratulations, Sue, on your first and second prizes at the showing. Wonderful that you were encouraged to enter them in the show and that they did so well.

I think the first bouquet of daffodils is quite beautiful also.

They are all pretty, but I really like the profile of Orange Phoenix.

Congrats! How cool. You should of brought more daffs with you just think what could of happened!
I'm very jealous you've got so many blooms there already. I've only got a couple blooming. Spring is always late to come here : (

That tells me you don't have enough daffs yet GF! Might you have some things to trade (besides seeds) when it comes proper daff trading time?

Now bear in mind that there are numerous divisions and classes...like about 200 of them.
A bloom in a particular class might have no competition, or there might be numerous entries in it. At any rate, regardless of how many entries there are, the First Place is only awarded if the bloom earns it, otherwise it might get a second or third, or honorable mention, or nothing.

The other bloom that won a second place was in Division 13, Species and Wild Variants. The bloom was poeticus, var poeticus. I'm not sure what was supposed to be capitalized there.

It is past its prime, but I just picked one for this pic.

Sue those are beautiful even if they weren't show worthy. I grow mainly pink daffs but had problems with the color this season. Most of my pinks start out with a yellowish tint and change color over a day or two. This season they either barely changed or took forever to pink up. I think it might have had something to do with the unseasonably cold temps we're having. The only good thing about the cold weather is the blooms have looked fresh for over 3 weeks.
