The seeds get crushed between those rollers the envelope passes through. Not all mail sorters are the same, but the first photo shows close up, some rollers that I would think all mail sorters would have to have.

I wonder if that's why you also get mail that's been ripped, opened, etc.

Exactly why you mail that's been ripped, open etc. The sorter or whatever got jammed and presto, ripped magazines, envelopes and yes the infamous shredded envelope that then gets a human touch. It's put in a plastic bag, sealed by the post office and a "letter, note", of apology is added to the remains of the envelope.

That's called progress folks.

I'll stick with the padded bubble mailer.

So that explains why all my SASE w/ seed come back w/ the bottoms ripped out! You'd think if the envelope was bulged or something it would be put in a hand sorted pile or something. I mailed some counter samples for my husband not too long ago, and the customer called saying she thought they opened it for inspection. The same day I got seeds and the bottome was ripped out just like the envelope she recieved.

I wish everyone would use bubble envelopes. I always do, but forgot to request that my trade partners do the same. As a result 80% of the seeds I received this week arrived crushed beyond recognition :(

A card is pretty, but it will not protect your seeds. The recipient just ends up with a pretty card with permanent indents from where the seeds were and smashed powder for seeds.

i know what ya mean, i have so many bubble envi's its pathetic!! i keep all of them that i get, and just reuse them! i have i don't know how many from last year! and how many did i get of my seed that were in bubbly's compared to what i sent out? i tell ya, i did learn that SOME seeds were NOT meant to be sent in envelopes that were not padded, someone sent me four o'clocks in them, ERRRR 2 made it. that was ok i had many more that came out of it, so i was still very happy!! **big smile** ~medo

Whenever I think of seed crushing mail sorters I get this mental image of two postal workers dressed in blue jumping up and down on bubble envelopes that they have thrown on the floor.

Once I had a BE arrive and it had a black tire track on one side. It had been a long time in getting here, but the bubbles protected the seeds just fine.

Wow, so glad you posted this. I didn't realize until seeing this how important a bubble mailer is to protect seeds I'm sending and receiving. Thank you! ;)
