crepe myrtle seeds??

I have a few crepe myrtles and have never collected seeds from them. Do I wait until the pods split open or do I pick them when they turn brown before they crack open????? The fire engine red one is beautiful this year. Would like to share but not sure about collecting the seeds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks & happy gardening. Bev.

Hi Bev,

I have collected them numerous times. It is best to wait until the pods crack open, in my opinion. The seeds don't all drop out or anything. I usually wait until very late in the season (late fall) and collect them when most all of them seemed to have split.

They are one of the easiest and most fun to harvest, clean and package.

Mine are just starting to split open. They do seem to be easy to collect. Many thanks. Bev.
