carnations (cutting back)

grew a bunch of carnations from seed and never got them planted. getting colder and want to save for next year.they are very spindly and was wondering if i can cut them back and how low can i go. would bring them inside under lights and kept warm(68 degrees).

    we are zone 5b, my mom planted a bunch of carnations, and hers grow back every year. ~medo
