| It took me two years to collect enough blue bottles to make a bottle tree. It probably took two minutes for someone to steal seven of them from me last night.
What, you may ask, does this have to do with the Seed Exchange? Every year I give away thousands of seeds for postage. I give plants away too, even had a box of iris at the curb with a free sign on it last night. I created and planted a 75 foot long flower bed this year for the historic society with no budget. I've been collecting, cleaning, and packaging seeds I had planned to offer within the next few day, but now I'm so P.O.ed that I can't be bothered to put myself out for anyone. So if you like orange flowers or bold and bright daylilies, I'm not offering them after all.
I'm sure, given a little time, I'll get over it. I expect I'll even be out gathering hosta seeds in a week or two when they're ready, but right now I'm just MAD! |

My family runs a small store and we have met a few thieves ourselves. Our worst theft was $100.00 in cash. That was an oucher! Well please do not stay mad for long. There are some people who will take advantage of you but many more who appreciate you and your hard work. Rebekah

I'm sorry about the theft. I'm sure it was much more painful as you had spent so much time and effort on the project. If I come across any blue bottles, I will save them and contact you.

As some of you may know, we did a very large show during September. Every year, we have at least one thief. Well we didn't know about it this year, until a fellow vendor came up and asked if we had sold this huge amount of stuff to a woman in a leather jacket. Well with nearly 2 million people, it's difficult to say. Come to find out, this person had stolen more than $1800 worth of items from vendors all over the show. She had us for about $80 worth, but she was right under our noses packing the stuff up. We never noticed a thing. THANK GOD for the other vendor who caught her. Anyway, she'll be doing a minimum 1 year sentence...she is now a felon. I know it's tough, but they will get theirs sooner or later. And one way or another, they will be paying back those blue bottles. You may never know it, but someone upstairs knows what happened and will make sure they pay for it. Keep your chin up. Toni

Yup...some folks will steal the nichols off a dead man's eyes. My garden club put to gether a HUGE gardeners gift basket and sold tickets on a chance to win to raise money for two large planted urns to go next to the door of our new historical museum and not two weeks after we placed them, they were gone...off the corner of a busy intersection. Someone took my rake last year after I propped it up against our mailbox and went in for lunch....How sorry is that? Now I spray paint my small tools handles hot pink. They may steal them but they'll have to use them in the dark. Peggy

Medo, I wish I could be like you and not get mad at people. My first thought was to rub each bottle in a patch of pioson ivy and then put them back on the tree. jim_6b |

Mao~ I'm so sorry that happened to you! I can imagine how discouraged you are right now :( I agree with what Toni says up there tho.. what comes around goes around! Several of us here will keep you in mind when blue bottles are found tho. I certainly will! Were they the full size wine bottles? If so, send me your address if you want to, I have at least one I could share.. Jim~ I'm still chuckling over that.. that is soooo much the type of thought that would cross my mind..lol Assisting the Karma police.. .just a wee bit... :P Hugs, Wendy / sassyb...

I know just how you feel. In this modern world of ours,i think, people have just gone insane. It seems the good people are always getting screwed over!(especially us 'wierd' gardeners) Take some time to yourself and you will rebound! Let us hope that "what goes around, comes around" ! and remember, angry little people always get their comeuppance. :)

I understand; been there and done that...still not over the most recent one. We have put a driveway alarm on our mailbox and at the side of our house to warn us if someone is walking on our property. My husband heard someone talking outside our bedroom window last week at 3am. Our neighbor next door was gone so we knew it was not them. The neighbor across the street told us her son's car alarm went off at 1am that night, then we learned there had been break-ins on the street behind us and 3 streets over as well. I remember when I was a kid we didn't even lock our doors! Seems there are people who think that if they want something they can just take it. Peggy

Mao, I'm sorry! I'm glad, though, that no one broke into your house! There have been a bunch of break-ins and robberies where I live. It's sad though that we can't have special things without worrying that we'll become a target for them. I'd love to ship you a bunch of blue bottles to make up for your loss, but I can't. Something I could do for you, though, if you contact me and tell me where you live, is I will call around to restaurants for you, and get one or more of them to save blue bottles for you! In theatre I used to do this, to get Dom Perignon bottles and the like. You could do this too, but some people are more shy about it. I'd be happy to do it for you. If your blue bottles were special and antique, this of course won't replace those. :(

My parents had a beautiful big plumeria tree in their front yard. Last month they noticed that several branchs had been hastily cut during the night. They have since struck three more times and have left holes in the once big full tree. They are so sad since this tree was bought for them by my grandpa many years ago. We have notified the sheriff but it did seem like a waste on time. All they said was "we will patrol more often which they have not done. My husband did stake outs several nights and never saw any patrol cars. Any ideas?

Busybee, I have 2 suggestions. One is way cheaper than the other. Option 1. Post a sign on the tree stating that the spot is under video surveillance for trespass and theft, and that offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Option 2. Get a "game camera" which takes photos when motion is detected, and will also take photos at night. Turn those photos into the sheriff.
RE: Thief!

Sorry to hear about the tree but sadly I'm not surprised. It happens so often. My more valuable (either sentimental or monetary) plants are in the backyard behind an 8' privacy fence. Don't people realize that most gardeners are very generous and would happily share a cutting if they were just asked? I've taken walks and if I see something I really like will knock on the homeowners door and ask about said plant. Most times I've been offered cuttings or seeds. I will admit that I do snatch seeds from public places but would never disfigure or damage the plant.

Please do not get discouraged. It sounds as though there are more good people out there than jerks. I'd like to see someone try that in our yard. Our Turkeys let us know whenever there is something amiss. Good luck to you finding more blue bottles.
