RE: Wanted: Cocoa Plant

It's a very fast growing tree but is extremely cold sensitive and needs high humidity. It's an understory tree and needs bright filtered light. I've managed to get one to bloom but no pods and I always end up losing them. The longest I've kept one alive is about 5 years. The seeds are easy to germinate but have an extremely short viability. They can't be allowed to dry out at all.

At the San Diego Zoo (in zone 10) they tried to grow one outdoors, in heated soil, but it didn't work. They are experts with plants as well as animals, so I figure if they can't do it, I can't. I didn't realize when I bought mine that it would be an indoor plant. I've had it for several years. I really need to put it into a bigger pot but I don't know where I'm going to put a small tree inside.
