Go to your local Hispanic market (or a grocery that carries ethnic foods) and ask for Pigeon Peas/Gandules. A one-pound prepackaged bag costs around a dollar.

I soaked a quarter-cup of them over night, then spread out on a damp paper towel on a heat mat, and got about 65% germination.

They do need warmth to germinate.
