Hosta Help?

Posted by AndreaFahey 5 (My Page) on

I am very new to this, and have a new house where one side gets no sun and can be pretty damp. Thought some hostas would work in the shade over there. Are there Hosta seeds, or are they only grown from plants? I saw one called Fireworks ( Plantain Lily) that looked neat, just not sure I am in the right place to trade for them... should I be in the plants part of the forum? Guess I need lots of shade-loving plants...

Thanks!

If you want plants that are identical to a named cultivar, then you have to trade for that plant. But you can grow some great hostas from seed--select the ones you like the best.

I have several varieties of hosta seeds on my trade list. Look at them and send me an email if you find any you are interested in.

Kms, are they hard to grow from seed? I planted (wintersowed) two varieties a few weeks ago and have had zero germination. Any tips?

Hostas are easy to grow from seed but they grow v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. They are the cutest sprouts you've ever seen so go ahead and winter sow them. Clothier's database says they take 3-4 weeks to germinate.

I've got tons of hosta seeds you can have for postage. They're fresh harvested from H. sieboldiana elegans, a gorgeous, large blue-green hosta.

There's some information & photos on growing them from seed on the Hosta Library website (see link below).

Here is a link that might be useful: Hosta Library

Andrea - I've grown hosta from seed also and just sow them in a pot and stick the pot behind a bush and let nature take it's course [!] Have seed for a very large [18"] hosta with a yellow edge and would like to trade for your tall zinnia and coneflower. Doreen.
