Stinging nettle wanted

I know I sound crazy to some people, but I want to grow some stinging nettles in my backyard. I don't see them growing wild in my neighborhood, and seeds I sowed several weeks ago do not seem to be germinating. If you have seeds to share, or better yet, if you have seedlings/plants to share in Central Kentucky, please email me.

I have the following seeds to trade:

-French marigold (mix of orange, red/orange, yellow flowers; seeds harvested from my backyard in 2011)
-Orange cosmos (seeds harvested from my backyard in 2011)
-Japanese "yomogi" mugwort (mix of 3 different varieties purchased from Kitazawa Seeds in 2011)

Germination rate for french marigold and orange cosmos seem to be pretty high; as for yomogi, I'm not sure yet.

Thank you!

P.S. Could anyone please tell me how to create "my trade list" on my profile? I've been looking for the instructions for hours but can't find them.

Welcome gardenfairy_in_ky!

See tthe first 'reply' in the thread below for instructions on getting your Member Trade List set up. The first post tells how to set up your garden zone/location, (so it will automatically be displayed when you make a post) which is often helpful when asking or answering questions here on GW.

While I understand your wanting to grow the unusual. I want to remind you that stinging nettles are considered an invasive plant and once introduced are hard to take back. Not only you but your neighbors may have to live with them for the rest of their lives. Please consider again before actually putting these plants in your garden.
I have attached a link to information including germination information if you are certain that you want to do this.

Sue, thank you for the instructions. I was able to start creating my trade list!

Love2gardennc, thank you for your response and the information. I want to grow stinging nettles to harvest the leaves to consume....I plan to confine them in one spot and harvest seeds before they fall to the ground.

I would like to hear if anyone has any successful or unsuccessful/regretful stories of growing stinging nettles in backyard, which might give me second thoughts.

I have stinging nettle growing in the barn yard. I eat it fresh but it's most potent dried then used as a chew.
E-mail me if you want some.

l_james, thanks for your response. I'll email you if I decide to take your offer. For now I'm a bit hesitant about receiving live plants in mail. It's fascinating that people try so many ways to consume stinging nettle!
