I found the idea online and it sounds really fun. basically i start a box of seeds and then ship it to the next person on the list. that person then takes what they want and adds a few seeds themselves. then the box is shipped to the next person until it gets back to me then I send it around again so everyone gets something different and it just keeps going from there. the person that receives the box just has to pay the shipping to the next person.

I'd be interested, sounds like fun. I live in the SF Bay Area.

sweet that makes five people. hoping to get it up to six or more this round. any one wants a certain kind of seed in particular. i got some great tomato seed I'm putting in and a few of other stuff, thanks. as soon as we reach six ill ask everyone to send me their name, address and phone number by email not forum. there will be a list of people's name and address in the box so you know who to send to next. I'll keep the phone numbers in case i have to reach the next person on the list. if said person doesn't respond they will be skipped. you will have 3 days to ship the box that way it will get around in a timely fashion. each person is responsible for shipping.usually putting seeds in envelopes or zip lock bags keeps the weight down. have a great day everyone, looking forward to this train leaving the station. remember this is mostly for veggie seeds but a few thrown in flowers never hurt anyone lol.

nope not too late, hopefully ill be able to get everyone's address by this weekend and send the box off by Monday.
|
Rollinrockell, just a thought -- it might be helpful to have some written general instructions to be included with the seed train box, as a reminder of how we should handle it and send it on.

thank you, a list of rules in the box is a good idea. ill try and create a list tomorrow to see if everyone agrees with it. I love to hear more ideas if anyone is willing to share them. I'll also post a list of people who will be participating just cause i don't wanna miss anybody.( just the forum names). thanks rockell

Rockell, I perused through the FAQs for the "round robin exchange", and it sounds just like the seed train. There are some useful tips in there; they recommend that whoever organizes the round robin/seed train should also print up mailing labels of all the participants of the exchange (or at least a list?) in be included in the package, also with their GW name. Seems like a good method to keep things organized, so no time is lost. (i.e. so the next person can send the package off right away) Also, when the package arrives/is mailed off, the recipient or mailer should post an update here. Just so we're all on the same page. :) Now that I've sifted through all this info on Round Robins, I'm guessing that that forum is probably a better place to post about this exchange. Rockell, that's up to you if you want to bother moving all this to the Round Robin forum, or keep it here in the Seed Exchange. I'll stay in which ever thread you want to be based out of. For the future though, in case this seed train is a success and you want to add more people, I'm guessing the Round Robin forum would be a great place to recruit!

thanks Astroknot, you've be a big help.i want to move this to the round robin forum but i figured since everyone who wants to participate at the moment is all ready here I'll leave it in seed exchange for this round then move it. I Also got a list of rules I've put together. sorry its kinda long. 1. All seed train members will need to supply me with name 2. seeds only please, no bulbs as this makes the weight go up 3.each person is responsible for paying to ship the box to the next person. 4. Please package seeds in paper envelopes or Ziploc baggies, again, to save on weight and postage. 5. All seeds are welcome, from commercial packages to home saved. 6. please post when you recive the box so we know you recived it. this way I can contact the next person. 7. like wise please post when u ship the box. 8. if i can't contact the next person in line via forum, email or phone. they will be skipped. 9.Please try to send the box on as quickly as possible, 10. Take as much as you would like from the box and replace with a like amount of seed. 11. Please post to this thread and let other riders know if there is something special you have to does anyone think i should wait since only 3 people wanna participate or should we just go ahead with this?

Rockell, I don't mind starting the train now with just the 3 of us, although I wonder if a flat-rate box is worth it since there probably won't be enough weight to make a regular bubble mailer cost more than a couple of dollars? I don't exactly know how many seeds we'll be trading to each other but I don't imagine a large box would be necessary at this point. Well, as for our small train maybe it couldn't hurt to post at the Round Robin exchange and see if any one else wants to join in. That forum gets a lot of traffic, and I'm guessing that a lot of people who'd normally participate have bypassed this forum here (i.e. they haven't seen this thread). You'd announce this as a "Cali residents" trade, or whatever. Your seed train rules sound great. This'll be fun! I think I have some good veggies and edibles to trade. Not really a lot of summer crop vegetables, though. And it's probably too late in the year to be growing certain plants (but it's California, what does that matter! Our seasonal pattern is kinda weird right now anyways.) Off the top of my head I've got some peas, herbs, lettuce, radishes, peppers, egg plant, kale, and I found some Romanesco broccoli seeds a couple of days ago that I'm really excited about planting!
|
I also think maybe you should post this in the Round Robin forum to try to get more California gardeners involved. Also a bubble mailer sounds better. Rules look good.
