Only have a couple, this one comes from south texas. Picked them off a vine growing up a tree at a local river bank.

Sorry for the stupid question but why would someone intentionally plant poison ivy seeds?

RE: Have Toxicodendron Radican

Another related question....why would anyone intentionally climb up and pick the berries? Is this some kind of S&M thing? LOL

Actually, I wouldn't mind growing different types, just for the novelty of it, if I wasn't so allergic to it and had some kind of containment so I'd know they wouldn't escape and produce even more itching gardeners. Believe it or not, someone was actually searching for different strains of this stuff, here on Gardenweb, a few years back.

Just some random thoughts that really make you wonder about this new member.

Registers and posts a seed offer all on the same day.

Posts a seed offer, for of all things, poison ivy.

Posts the seed offer for poison ivy using the botanical name with NO INDICATION OF WHAT IT IS REALLY KNOWN AS.

Appears to have been "exposed" by karyn1 as a very strange, to say the least, seed offer.

Once Karyn1 has posted her question, there is a another one posted but no response from the OP.

Only post the OP has made.

As I said to start, just some random thoughts on this seed offer, the OP, makes you wonder, doesn't it.

ADVISE TO MEMBERS

always check out with a google search what the botanical name of a seed or plant offer is. IE the common name as well.

Always be suspicious of strange seed offers like this one.

Fran I intentionally responded to this post using the common name. I also looked up this person's GW history and after not seeing any response came to the same conclusions as you.

I tried to find the posts I remember from about a year or two ago that were very similar to this to see how they compared, but had no luck. I don't remember for sure which GW forum they were posted to (I think this one). I remember the guy was wanting seeds from different populations and was going to amass a PI collection. That guy did respond to some questions. Everyone thought he was nuts, but he was totally serious.

P.S.

BTW, the proper name is Toxicodendron radicans (with an s at the end).

I've had my own run in with this particular not so fun lovely while horseback riding. :( Why anyone would want to intentionally plant this noxious plant is beyond my understanding. Pure misery.

I joined and posted to trade something the same day, so that doesn't really send a flag to me.

Actually, about 2 years ago, someone from a University (I think) was looking for seeds of this plant to do some kind of a study.

Weird as it is, a long time ago (late 80s I think), Fine Gardening ran an article on fall color and listed poison ivy as a vine with wonderful autumn foliage. The next month they posted a retraction after they were inundated with letters from people telling them how idiotic their advice was.

Finally, years ago I posted variegated horseradish to trade and was actually offered variegated poison ivy from someone in Florida. For about a split second I was actually tempted, but chose something else from their list instead.

So, you never know...

RE: Have Toxicodendron Radican

Growing up in California, I always enjoyed the fall color of poison oak (T. diversilobum). Also appreciated that it made it easy to see and avoid, although being highly allergic, I learned to recognize the distinctive appearance of its leaves and bare stems at any time of year.
I even tried to train one as bonsai, though it was a lot of hassle. Threw it out when my first child started to walk.
Anyway, I am not now interested in seeds of poison ivy.

First look- toxic- not interested! First thought- prankster...most likely, ignoring.
