WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Posted by bugbite z9a FL (My Page) on

...That one you cannot live without.

The one you save seeds from and plant every year or it reseeds.

I will exchange for my single best annual that I collect seeds from and that faithfully reseeds. The palnt I can not live without because it can bloom all year long.
It is: Yvonne's Salvia (not available commerically) This plant was discovered in Yvonne's garden in Mass.
The picture is of Yvonne (now deceased), her husband and her salvia.

**OR**

Currently I have a brand new Zinnia that was just introduced to the states. (See link)
Zinnia elegans Super Cactus by Hemzaden - Description: extra large tetraploid flowers, quilled petals
MIX
It is from my 2013 order. I opened the foil envelope to rush and see if I could grow some before our first freeze.

Trade: 20 seeds of either for 20 seeds from you.
I furnish the envelope for return. You place the single stamp for return on the envelope. The seeds will be sent in my new approach to a foam envelope.

Please only fresh seeds from your very favorite and I will do the same.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob, is it possible to trade for more than 2 pkts?
Sure am interested in your zinnia.
Not sure what you mean about 1 stamp postage?
My favorites are coral vine and pink round zinnia, but what appeals the most to one doesn't to another, good to see you and pic of the nice couple, RIP, with their salvia, weather we trade or not.

happy trades,
Bea

Dear Yvonne and her glorious salvia...she lives on thru the Seed Exchange.

My tried and true very favorites are biennial - columbine, and annual - poppies, Bob. More description on my page (colors). I don't have Yvonne's salvia anymore, and would love to have some.

LMK--

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Hi Bea,
Thanks for the email. I appreciate your response.
Regarding: "is it possible to trade for more than 2 pkts?"
Do you mean do a trade for both the salvia and zinnia? Or 40 zinnia seeds?
Sure. It's up to you.
What I am going for are seeds from a plant(s) that you grow and love..a proven plant you repeatedly grow from seeds.
I have tried so many that do not do well. 37 varieties two years ago and over 24 last year. Only a limited number were real winners. I tryed many highly hyped new seed varieties provided as test samples by the seed developers. Sometimes in southern home gardens they just don't do well with the heat, humidity, local bugs, etc.
So I was going to do a "Your best for my best" trade to improve the odds. But if a person did not want my best (Yvonne's salvia) than the Zinnia was a alternative; it's new and I have not evaluated it, yet. But it is a tetraploid zinnia and those are rare.
Regarding the stamp. I found a way to send seeds in an envelope with foam that takes one stamp instead of the $1.60 I have been paying. You can use what I send it in and your return postage would be a single stamp.
What method of mailing do you use? Sure would like to learn some alternatives that get the seeds safely to their destination without expensive mailing costs.
Thanks,
Bob

LMK,
I would be happy to trade. Pick your very favorite on your trade list and I will take that, please. Do you have a way of emailing me through this site? I forgot how that works.
I enjoyed reading your page.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bob,

I would love some of Yvonne's Salvia seeds! I have to say I am obsessed about collecting seeds from my pink columbine. They have a high germination rate and have done very well for me for years! I also have some blue flax seeds and some white blooming, garlic chive seeds. I have been impressed with the garlic chives. This was my third year growing them and I have to say they are a keeper.

Let me know,
Indiana.Matt

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Thanks for the replies Bob, figured what you meant except for the postage as I've always sent different seed packs in a padded envelope and usually 3 stamps, imagine coral vine seeds wouldn't be suitable for plain envelope as they are rather bulky...what I meant with more than 2 pkts - overall, adding more variety while at it, getting most for the postage, but am ready to trade for 2 of yours and whatever way you ship I'll ship mine, adding extras- glad to share what does well, let them spread in new homes.
You can choose at least 2 of your favorites from my list, I'd like both of yours, sure if you have plenty double pkts would be good, let me know what you decide...thanks.

seed trades are pure fun

Holy Cow! No wonder everyone is after that salvia!!

Nothing says reliablity and longevity like natives: rudbeckia, plains coreopsis and echinacea.

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bigred,
I planted Gompherna "Fireworks" last year. Huge sprawling plants. Definitely a winner. The zoo planted a few here and there this year and were shocked when they saw how large they got. Absolutely beautiful.
My space is very limited so I did not plant them this year, but a plant came up anyway. I waited and waited for the blooms. Then came the blooms. Tiny white flowers on an arching 1 inch section. Not the original bloom. Must be what they crossed it with.
My question is..have you found that the reseed true?
Incidentally they make great dryed flowers. You can keep the blooms for 6 months in a dry vase...same look as fresh.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bea - I go for flowers that are great for picking and my favorites right now are orange cosmos [love that color!] and rudbeckia triloba [prairie coneflower] Would love to trade for both your goodies. I usually reuse old greeting cards and send them with one stamp and all is fine. Let me know - Doreen.

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Doreen,
I am using a greeting card with a thin dense piece of foam inside. Opening cut out for seeds. Seems to work.
If you meant to address to me, Bob (versus Bea) email me your adress and I will send the seeds.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

I have seed of Asclepias curassavica and Talinum paniculatum 'Kingswood Gold' if you are interested. The Asclepias is a wonderful host plant for monarch butterflies.

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Carol23,
I was just outside looking at my Asclepias Curassavica. The hornets and yellow jackets visit along with butterflies.
I think I understand why, because the bees don't seem to be getting pollen.
They eat the caterpillars and as a result want to make darn sure that host is around to ultimately give them their caterpillars. When I see caterpillars I remove them from the plant and place them in a safe place; then I feed them the plant.
Anyway, email me and give your address and we will do the trade for the Talinum paniculatum.
Incidentally, hummingbird love this salvia. Oddly so do redbirds.
Thanks very much for the reply,
Bob

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Okay, I NEED some of that salvia! And I'd love to try the zinnias, too.

One of my favorite things is Ipomoea setosa, aka Brazilian morning glory. I've also got a great hollyhock mix.

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Hi Bob, I sure hope that I'm not to late for trading for that Salvia Yvonne, and the Zinna seed. Bob, you are the most interesting person that has been on GW, in a long time.
This is the first yr. that I have saved seed, and you probably have all that I can offer. I do have a new Hollyhock Mars Magic alcea, that I think is beautiful. I have lots of seed of it. I have a sweet pea, that has been in the family over
100 yrs. I tell you, if you will tell me what new seed that
you would like, I would get on line and fine it for you, and
send it right out. I would love having either, or both of
your Yvonne's salvia, and the zinna.
Thanks,
Waiting to hear,
djune/Donna

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Hi Donna,
Could you do me a favor and tell my wife how "interesting" I am. On second thought, maybe not. I'm sure she would have a compelling rebuttal to the contrary. :-)
I will email you about the trade.
I looked up the Hollyhock Mars Magic alcea and it is beautiful. Unfortunately the bugs in my garden are daring me to plant another hollyhock, but I would love to trade for the sweet pea.
Emailing you. Thanks,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bob, great story and great way to keep these rare beauties alive. I would love to trade your 2 for 2 of mine. Mine are Woodland Nicotania, cant wait for the almost jasmine like fragrance each year. Also, Americana Sweat Pea also a great smell. Please let me know if they interest you.

Thank you, Kelli

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Fireworks is the only gompherna in my yards so yes,it comes true from seed for me and since I have a large yard, anything that gets big, spreads and self-sows is a keeper for me.....now I need some of that salvia.

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Hi Bea,
Herbs or flowers, either.
This is all about you :-), not me.
I want your favorite.
Yvonne's salvia is my favorite. My wifes favorite is Belinda's Dream and I just rooted her 4 more this last fall, so she's good, thanks for the kind thought. :-)
If I could get only one from you and it is your favorite, I would be a happy camper.
Would love to build a collection of the single favorite flower/herb from members of this forum.
Thanks again Bea,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bigred,
Glad to hear it comes back true. I could kick myself for not saving that one volunteer that came up. It was not true and might have been a cool plant anyway. I yanked it because I needed the space.
Firework seeds are expensive... cheapest I have seen is 100 for $11.
I got it 2 years ago when several of us put in seed orders with a wholesale type seed company. We ordered our own individual seed choices, then we split the seeds with everyone. Fortunately, someone ordered it.
At the zoo, people on the butterfly tour were grabbing the flowers from Fireworks for the seeds and I was concerned that the flower would not repeat for them. Glad to hear that they will.
I will email about the salvia.
Thanks,
Bob

 o
RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Bigred,
Your email address is not on your page.
Email me at:
bflowers@southern-homegardens.com
I need your address.
I am sending about 20 seeds. Believe me if you collect the seeds from this first batch you will have all you will ever need. I put them everywhere in my yard. When planting as a group, which is very showy, plant about 12-18" apart.
If you have intense sun, plant these in light shade. They are not like normal salvias. They mutated in Mass.
Thanks,
Bob

Thanks,
Bob

RE: WANTED: Your single best annual (or perennial)

Hi Bob,
My favorite is Nicotiana alata which blooms all summer (more fully open at night), is fragrant and reseeds. I also love Snapdragon Black Prince. Not only is it a beautiful garnet color but it bloomed through our entire brutally hot dry summer even when everything else was drooping - so it might make it in your zone. I'd love to try your salvia.

Bob, googled " Belinda's Dream" and it's a rose, right?
Great you've rooted it for your wife, your yard must be nice, are you two fond of vines? I must have green beans and cukes vining among the flowers.

Hi Bea,
The vining cukes and/or beans sound like a cool idea in the flower beds. Thanks
Regarding Belinda's Dream: Of all of the hundreds and hundreds of roses, the AARS only recommends two for the Southeast, which is pretty amazing. See link below. It is the only Hybrid tea that is highly fragrant and does not get blackspot or diseases.
