Momgardens1, Do you have camellia sinensis seeds from your garden? I'd like to ask you a question. Is camellia sinensis self-pollinating? I have only one plant and it's just started to bloom. Wonder if it will produce seeds. Thanks.

Stockman, honestly I couldn't tell you I have camelias on my property that have not produced any seed pods , but the ones I recently collected from my mothers properrty were covered in seed pods, almost look like little crab apples, on another note I can tell you that the seed pods began forming long before the blooms began here in NC they started about end of August and are ripe now, but the blooms just started a week ago.

Sorry for off-topic, does your mother have different camellia sinensis plants? Thank you.

Not sure of the names since she wasnt the one to plant them but they are single blooms and thre different colors, white, pale pink, and dark pink? But these like many other trees and bushes may not always come true from seed.

I believe if somebody asks for camellia _sinensis_, they want the leaves not the blooms. It will be quite disappointing to get something else. Here is a picture of a flower from Sochi Tea plant (camellia sinensis var assamica) from a few days ago. Does any of your camellias have similar blooms? If you have favorable conditions for camellias and live in the zone 8, you can grow your own tea! I'm not the original poster, just asking some off topic questions. Thanks for answering!

Gvodika one way I have seen people use to check for a self pollinating camellia is to check the flower for male and female parts if it has both it is likely a possible self pollinator
