WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

Hi everyone,

As you may have noticed, we've been sprucing up the site a bit. Among other things, we've added new ways to upload photos and email notifications of post replies. We are still cleaning out cobwebs and weeding some areas of the site, but we are also working on some bigger projects like a better search engine (yay!) and a mobile app. We'd also like to get some feedback from you. What enhancements or additions would you like to see? What do you love? What do you hate? Think big and small!

We can't promise the moon, but please know that we will read and consider every one of your ideas and suggestions. We appreciate your loyalty and dedication to our site and we know how important your community is to you. Help us make it even better!

Please use this post to offer your feedback. But, as always, you are welcome to contact me directly by clicking on my profile page.

Best regards,

Tamara Amey

Hello, I visit daily and love all the great forums. I would love to be able to see the search results listed by date; the most recent ones first etc. Thanks, JR

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

A possible way to identify older messages( a post form 2006 still getting requests for information and the original member is either no longer active or some have passed away) a change in text color or something like that. clean up the trade or exchanges that are 3-6 months old or more. Information is fantastic but trades seem to generally only last for a season or two. Maybe under archived trades... an archived area could identify posts older than a year or two. just an idea....

I like it, and enjoy GW so much.
Thank you,

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

I'd love to see an option for a skip to new or last read in the post. I hate having to scroll through to where I left off, some threads can be long.

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

What do you love?
About everything. I think for the most part members are considerate and polite and read and follow the rules.

I would like to see the ability for a member to close a thread they started especially here on the exchange boards.

Possibly trade threads that are older than one(?), two (?), three (?) months being locked by GW, though still found via a search and viewable. Showing old and older posts shows a member's posting and trading history, along with reviews that aren't always posted at The Rate and Review (member's trades) Forum.

I'd like to see additional links at the top of the forum page, like here at The Seed Exchange, linking to some more 'pertinent' forums, like
Rate and Review Forum
and The Garden Exchange Forum.
Maybe members aren't aware of The Garden Exchange Forum, and maybe don't have actual seeds or plants to trade, but do have other 'goodies' available that they would welcome trading.

I would like to see a search box, clearly being for search results for a specific forum...like the search box found in the blurb at the top of the Ponds and Aquatic plants. The Rate and Review Forum could really benefit from such a feature so that so many new review threads would not be started when there is actually an existing review thread...or in some cases, numerous threads for one member. I realize though that there will still be some who will miss reading The Forum Instructions, thus will probably start some new threads without searching.

As so many others have stated on other forums...the ability to edit one's post, but with strict restrictions, since it 'could' have some bad ramifications if posts disappeared out of a trade offer/agreement. Maybe allow editing for up for a period of time, if there are no replies to the thread yet?...or up to 5 minutes?

Am I over thinking this? I'll probably be back with more.

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

I am new to GW and am already a seed exchange addict. I love this idea and love how well it works. My biggest problem when I wanted to start trading was getting set up. If you could just have the Member Pages or maybe a "getting started" option at the top of the page it would make it a lot easier. Also I like to check my posts from my phone and the fact that the member log in button isn't right next to the place to log in can be difficult on a little screen.

It would be nice to be able to find and update our profiles. This is a great website. I keep telling others about this site, I know some may join but like most free advice most do not ever look. I am very happy with the contacts-exchanges or just plain give-away where others or ourselves can share our surplus seeds. I still have not gotten the hang of uploading more than one photo at a time.
Many Thanks for your website.

Paul

How about the ability to Rate & Review a member from their Member Page with just the click of a button (or link)?

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

1. I find it difficult to 'find' the person I want to rate and review. I have to scroll through or hope a search works. I can't really compare GW to Ebay, but rating on Ebay is so easy and it's very effective. Could the names be alphabetized instead of listed by date so I can find the person easier?
2. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I always go to the bottom of the page and click Exchanges & Trading or Member Pages. Can you put those at the top of the page?
3. More photos of flowers/plants in your layout that add visual appeal and change/slide show/etc. Maybe even photo credit-Daylily 'Happy Days' by daylilytrdr in Peoria, IL.
4. I agree with the above-stated. People are still commenting on posts/trades from over a year ago. Maybe the newest posts could be at the top instead of the bottom, like the idea of time limit.

Now let me tell you the things you're doing RIGHT.
1. Easiest website I've seen to list seeds/plants available and wanted for trade. A+. Don't take that lightly. Your set up is head and shoulders above the competition.
2. Your website is almost never 'down' or not working.
3. Like the 'community feel' of the website-the interaction and connectivity of the members.
4. Thank you for not charging membership or monthly fees. I know you have to work hard to get advertising. You do a very nice job.
5. I never thought I'd visit a website EVERY DAY, but I visit this one and I love it. We're enthusiasts (okay, we're addicts), but as addictions go, it's a good addiction. Your site helps people connect, laugh, share stories and LEARN. Thank you.
6. Not sure where other people stand, but your website doesn't get too heavy into slang and shortcuts (ISO, LMK, DPYN). I have teens in the texting life and it drove me crazy so I made up my own-DPYN-don't pick your nose. When they start talking text language around me I pull this one out and they say, "Mom!" Then we go back to regular English. It's also a friendly place where I can ask, "What does that mean?" if I don't know and people don't treat me like I'm in first grade.
Thank you for all you do.
Heidi

Ditto to all of the above, but especially to Ronnie's suggestion of having a "skip to end" option to keep from having to scroll through long threads.

Hi everyone!

You asked and we listened. Today we are very excited to be debuting our newest feature -- post editing! To use this feature, go back to the post you wish to correct and you'll find the link under the 'My Clippings' links on the right side of the page.

I want to give a special shout out to all the testers who tried to break the editing tool. ;) Your feedback was insightful and invaluable. Thank you!

You may have also noticed that we adjusted the login cookie awhile back so that you should not have to login repeatedly.

Stay tuned -- we have more cool things in the works!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Tamara

RE: WANTED: GardenWeb needs your feedback!

No one has mentioned the annoying Netflix ad that pops up as soon as one of the threads has been selected to read. I do have a pop-up blocker and it always tells me it has blocked pop-ups on your site, but this one gets through every time. I don't mind the ads on the sidebar that I can click on if I'm interested and scroll by if I'm not but I don't appreciate being forced to "X" out the Netflix ad OR to have to wait for the ad at the very top that initially pushes the thread list down and then back up when it closes itself. I don't know how many times I've found myself on a thread other than the one I selected because of that box changing the locations of the list.

Otherwise, I appreciate GW, have made many friendships through the forum.
