Newbie needing help

Hi -

I'm fairly new to gardening (always tried to have at least 1 tomato and/or bell pepper plant every year.... not always so successfully)

Anyway, my church is supposed to be starting a community garden this spring, and I'd love to know what veggies (or herbs or edibles) are the easiest for not-so-experienced gardeners to grow.

In addition, if someone has some seeds that we can get for postage or packaging, that would help us. (And then I'll have saved seeds to trade next year.... as soon as I figure out how to save them... but that's ANOTHER post! lol)

Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: Newbie needing help

Hi Cherone,

Welcome to Garden Web and The Seed Exchange.

Please see addressing newbie and newer member issues for getting your Member Page email link set up so you can easily be reached. You might want to, as a courtesy, use the drop down box and choose to show your email address to Members. That way, if members are getting the follow-up replies emailed to them, they can conveniently 'reply' to the email as opposed to having to come back to the thread and your Member page link.

The replies in that thread also cover setting up your Trade List, even if it is just for things you are looking for. It is a help to others when they are sending you seeds. Another reply tells how to look for and respond to the many generous offers made by members with excess seeds to share.

Lastly, you might want to stop by the Vegetable Gardening Forum and do some reading and ask some questions. You might provide info like the size of your proposed garden plot, # of gardeners, etc.

hth.

I think you replied to my "Feed a Newbee" post earlier but your address was blocked.

I just finished the "Feed a Newbee" and started "Random Acts of Kindness" post didn't get as many respones on that one as I hope so when I'm done filling those 6-7 request,I'll still have too many stinking seeds so contact me about leftovers ,don't plan on doing any more sase post on them and I want them gone to make room for all the new seeds I ordered for 2010 so I probably can do a pretty good size box of seeds for your church. All the seeds I have are easy for newbee gardeners.

What state are you in? What's the climate like? Whats your soil like?

I think you're in zone 8. Which is the same zone im in (N. Texas)... the easiest veggie for me to grow is OKRA. It's not even a challenge. Once it starts producing, I have to constantly harvest (every 2 days).

Tomatoes are the most popular veggie and are fairly easy, and I recommend hybrids (Celebrity is my favorite) for newbies.

Peppers are also very easy. Not many pests/disease.

Squash is another good one, but takes some care. I have to watch for powdery mildew and squash vine borers - both can destroy my plants in no time flat.

Canteloupe are also easy for me to grow. I use "Hales Best" seeds. You can save these seeds since they are not hybrids.

Onions are very easy, as well as garlic - very little pest/disease.
Herbs - Cilantro grows very well out here.. sweet basil... just about any herbs grow well here.

Southern beans (Black eyed peas, purple hull peas) for the summer time... green beans (snap beans) in the fall and spring time. These do well..

Potatos - I recommend "Yukon Gold" seed potatoes planted early spring (jan-feb). I found these sold in Wal Mart's garden dept. in the area where you buy flowering bulbs, and bulb onions.

Anyway hope that helps.

Tim
