Can anyone tell me what this is?

A field around the corner has this growing in it, and my husband and I think it looks very nice from afar as you look across it. We were thinking of putting it in our unused horse pastures to make them look a little nicer, but I need to figure out what it is first. I am guessing it is some kind of cover crop, since most farmers around here grow corn and occasionally let a field rest and grow something else for a season and then till it in. It is probably something really obvious, but although I've grown up in the country I haven't been involved with working farms much. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

It's oats. :) If it's being grown and then plowed under, possibly they are growing it to enrich the soil with nitrogen.
