comb types of poultry

Chickens have many different shapes/styles of combs but there are only 2 genes for comb type. Rosecomb(R) and pea comb(P). A chicken with a rose comb will have at least 1 copy of (R) and a bird with a pea type comb will have at least 1 (P) gene. If neither the (R) nor the (P) is present the chicken will have a straight comb. A walnut comb, as on a Silkie, is a combo of the rose and pea type combs.

There are modifying genes which can cause the shape of each type comb to vary; a Hamburg and a Wyandotte each have rose combs yet they are different in style. Other modifiers can change the appearance ot the pea combs.

There are 16 possibilities of gene combination for comb type.
