I seen a picture of what you are talking about in a book once. The roosts were against the wall and the board was angled toward the wall with a door for cleaning on the lower outside wall. I think you could save space and some nasty work by just skipping the board, contain the area a little (2x10 plank boarder?) and using the outside door idea to rake the stuff out. Sift in a little lime now and then, and enjoy life.

I have a plastic storage box(bottom only) with a piece of fence bent on the ends to cover it.I have used this over a year and it has worked well.I put some shredded leaves in it and add some as it gets smelly.It is easy to empty and I have only had to clean the chicken house once a year.I use shredded leaves on the floor.My chicken house stays reasonably nice.I saw the droppings pit on the internet but don't remember the site.Good luck with your chicks.Posy_Pet

Sovia - I have put my new coop together with this and it works well. My biggest complaint is that I used hog fencing to discourage the hens from going through. I will be changing it to 2" chicken wire sometime this summer. I am still having a hard time sending pics on this forum I will try to pm you and send them that way, but if it does not work, pm me and I will send on my regular server.
Anyway back to the roosts. I have mine almost 6' tall and everyone fights for the top rung. I put a board on the front and left it dirt underneath so I can get in with a shovel. The roost actually hinges up and the front board removes with 4 screws. I put wood shavings in there to keep the smell down and add to my compost later. Hope this makes sense to you. Just to let you know, the chickens like it so well that I will be changing my other coops to this system as well.

Thanks msdave 2u.That is where I got the idea.My house is small and the bin works really well with a piece of fence with 2 by 4" openings in it.I throw some leaves on the droppings until the bin gets full.Posy Pet
