I've heard of people using those empty square kitty litter buckets turned on their side and bolted to the wall of the chicken coop. You can't get much simpler than that. My nesting boxes are made out of plywood but I have a kitty litter bucket outside the coop that I use to fill their food with and I've had hens lay in there. So they do like them. If you don't have cats find someone who does and I almost guarantee they'll have several sitting around.
