my first flock

greetings, longtime gardenweb poster, first time on this

forum

have had three lovley 12 week chicks, one new hampshire

red, one barred rock, and one buff orpington

brought them home in a cardboard box, now they only want

to sleep in the box, or on the box, but not on the roost

have seen them on it during the day, but when its time for

night-night they huddle in the corner and cheep till i put

the box back in the coop, then they get ontop of the box

and go to sleep

why won't they use the roost?

are they too young?

should i just let them cheep 'till they get tired enough

to just go to sleep?

funny, isn't it like having a new baby?? should i let them

cry?

LOL

also, the coop is solid on two sides, and wire mesh on the

other sides for ventilation, could that be the cause?

should we enclose the coop on all 4 sides?

the coop design is sort of a hybrid, we took an old dog

kennel, 4ft x 4ft x 4ft, build a platform 2ft up, and build a roof over the entire structure, then we made solid

walls for the two sides, but thought the bars of the kennel

would be enough to keep preditors out covered with the wire

mesh, but if they aren't feeling comfortable exposed like

that, maby thats why they won't get on the roost and sleep

thoughts?
