I would say leave it for ventilation, unless it's big enough for a predator to get in or enough rain can get it to make the litter damp.

I'd love to see pics, too! As far as the hole (how big is it?), I'd staple hardware cloth over it and leave it for air circulation, as long as it's near the top and won't create a draft right on the chickens. Good air circulation is a must, especially in summer.

As far as wintertime, as long as the hole(s) is small, I wouldn't worry. Some heat will escape, but it shouldn't be enough to freeze the birds. You can always make some kind of cover to go over the hole in winter if it makes things too cold.

we'll do,,sounds good. It used to be my 2 mini goats house,,but they will be leaving on monday to go to a new farm,sadly. I will miss them like mad,but I'm pregnant and need to make life a little easier on me. They kept going through fencing,every year I have to replace and it was just getting too time consuming and expensive to say the least.
my little hens are easy and I relax watching them. In a few years perhaps I will go back to goats with the proper set up,but it's not in the plans now.

I love setting up a nice place to sit in the morning with a cup of coffee and just watch them,,especially funny when they go after a bug! The only pain in the neck is keeping them free from mites and poultry lice,,because it's almost impossible when they are outside in the warmer months. Any good tips? I don't like to use the powder because i'm pregnant and it's a pesticide.
